General Advice/Tips for the New Mom

Giving birth is one of the most amazing experiences in the world. Mind you, your birth may not always go as you had planned but seeing your baby for the first time may very well be one of your best moments ever. I don’t think anyone is prepared for giving birth or especially for having a child. So many people tell you that while you are pregnant. You just can’t understand until you have your own child and learn it firsthand. Even though you may not be as prepared as you thought you were, you can get through with the help of your significant other and/or family and friends. It’s not always easy but it is so incredibly worth it.

My Reality

You know you’re going to be stuck at home in the beginning, especially if your baby is born in the winter. You know you are going to be feeding what seems like constantly all day long. (More so if your breastfeeding) You know you are going to be a little or actually a lot sleep deprived. You know you are not going to have all the answers. And still it wasn’t at all what I was prepared for.

My tip/advice:What I Learned

You just have to take it day by day. You will have your good days and bad days. Keep your husband or significant other involved. Having his help helped me get through. If you breastfeed try to pump too. I know people have different opinions but that way you can get a break and won’t be the only one feeding the baby. Ask for help if you need it. That was hard for me to do initially. When too many people are trying to help, ask them to back off unless you ask for it. (Especially, when it come to an overbearing mother!!!) They mean well but sometimes you need to figure some things out on your own.

I'm glad you said ask for help – so many women think they have to do it themselves and don't ask for help. Help can mean running errands or vaccuming the floor – every bit helps!Stopping by from SITS

  2. It is so important to adjust our expectations as needed! Stopping by from SITS

No matter what you're told or what you read, I don't think you're truly prepared for birth until you experience it yourself. And once you see your baby, you forget about it anyway!I agree that asking for help, even if it's hard, is something you have to do. And also be aware when you don't need help and voicing that.Good tips!

  4. Sounds exactly like the experience described to me by every mom I've known. Great advice!
